Louise sadly leaves us

Louise Davis, our North Wales Development Officer leaves post this month to begin a new future in Australia.
The whole of the GDW team as well as WGU and WLGU staff wish her the very best of luck in her new life and we hope that she comes back to visit us as often as she can.
Thank you Louise for all your hard work, enthusiasm and friendship. Diolch yn Fawr a phob lwc.

An announcement on her replacement will be made shortly but in the meantime, any queries with regard to golf development work in North Wales can be made to the head office in Newport.

Deals for Clubs
Each year, sports clubs in Wales collectively spend millions on goods and services but now they can reduce that expenditure through the WSA Club Preferred Suppliers List.
Providing discounts on anything from sports wear to marquee hire, the WSA Club Preferred Suppliers List enables sports clubs and their members to save money on their core sporting and fundraising activities. The List currently contains offers covering, sports equipment, trophies, sports medicine, sportswear, stationery, printing, marquee hire, event entertainments, musicians and on other event infrastructure.

The list has been compiled by David Cotton from the WSA's Commercial Unit,
"An equivalent list for the governing bodies has already enabled thousands to be saved. Now it's the opportunity for clubs to benefit from an extended selection of offers. This List represents a range of club benefits unparalleled throughout the UK."

The list can be accessed through clicking here or logging on to the WSA website at www.welshsports.org.uk

Woosnam Joins Team Wales
Ian Woosnam has been appointed official ambassador for Welsh golf in the run up to the 2010 Ryder Cup. The European captain of this year’s event in Ireland has agreed to be part of Team Wales to help increase Wales’ international profile and to maximise the benefits of the 2010 event.
“I’ve been proud to represent my country many times in my golfing career, but this is a great opportunity to make a practical hands-on contribution,” says Ian.

“Ryder Cup 2010 is going to make a huge difference to the growth of golf in Wales and to Wales’ international standing across golf, leisure and business.
“In all my travels nothing has annoyed me more than to be asked what part of England Wales is in. It is now part of my job to make that question extinct.”

Woosnam was invited to take a leading role by Ryder Cup Wales - the company formed to deliver the commitments of the successful Ryder Cup bid and to maximise the event’s impact on Wales.

Ryder Cup Wales chairman, John Jermine, said: “Ian coming on board is a big step forward in our task. As the most successful golfer Wales has ever had, he has been a wonderful, albeit unofficial, ambassador for many years.

"Now he is going to help us build on the progress we’ve already made in attracting youngsters to the game and promoting Wales as a tourism and business “must visit” destination. We are now able to use his personality and reputation to tempt golfers from all corners of the globe into Wales. I’m confident that his personal endorsement of Wales and its courses will have a knock-on effect on visitor numbers.”

Ian Woosnam – who will also be making personal appearances at a number of events - has a great Ryder Cup record. He has played in the event eight times and is the only European player to claim a maximum four points from the two foursomes and two fourball matches.

Woosnam is excited by the opportunity to raise the profile of his homeland. He added: “Playing on the US Seniors Tour will give me the opportunity to promote Wales all over America.”

“What is already happening to Welsh golf at every level is so encouraging. Stephen Dodd and Bradley Dredge did brilliantly to win the World Cup last year, we have some excellent young women golfers and a few of the younger guys look to have great potential. Within four years we’re aiming to see more promise in Welsh golf than ever before.”

Sherry Cup Successes
Congratulations to Nigel Edwards on winning the Sherry Cup at Royal Sotogrande and to the Welsh Mens team on finishing second to hosts Spain. Two great results for Welsh golf and another notable victory for Nigel folowwing his South African Amateur victory of last month.
