Gavin Henson - Clubbing it ! |
Wales
and British Lions star, Gavin Henson, is hoping to attract
youngsters and beginners into the world of golf as he prepares
to tee-off this weekend at the US v Europe
All* Star Cup celebrity golf tournament.
And for those wanting to get into the swing for the first
time, there’s never been a better time to try golf as
you can buy a small set for a very competitive price at 10
Tenovus shops across Wales, as part of the Let’s Club
Together scheme.
The pilot programme is run by Ryder Cup Wales 2010 Ltd and
Tenovus and aims to get golfers to donate their old and unwanted
golf clubs to the charity, which then sells them in its shops,
at low cost, to raise funds for cancer research, patient care
and support. It is endorsed by the Welsh Golfing Union and
the Welsh Ladies Golf Union.
Gavin said: “More and more children are spending time
in front of a computer or television and not getting the recommended
amount of exercise a day. It’s important that children
lead a healthy, active lifestyle and there are so many sports
to choose from that there is something to suit everyone.
“I really enjoy golf and think the Let’s Club
Together initiative is a brilliant idea. Parents can be put
off by the cost of sporting hobbies but this will break down
the barrier and hopefully attract more youngsters into sport.
I’m going to have to dig out my old golf clubs and get
to my nearest Tenovus shop soon!” |
Young Golfers Prepare for Faldo
Series Final 2005 |
As the regional events for the Faldo
Series 2005 draw to a close, preparations have begun
for this year’s final at The
Celtic Manor Resort on 18th September. The first 18
of the finalists have now been confirmed, having qualified
through the Order of Merit system in their respective regions
and the remaining finalists will be announced over the coming
weeks. Nick Faldo will of course be on hand at Celtic Manor
to encourage the future champions of European golf as they
bid for success.
Established in 1996 and now in its ninth season, the competition
attracts around three thousand enquiries each year, from
which five hundred golfers aged under twenty-one are selected
via a handicap ballot.
From this pool, a total of fifty players will qualify for
this year’s Faldo Series final, one of the country’s
most prestigious events. The event runs over three days
and includes a Master-Class with Nick Faldo himself.
|
But the benefits being offered to the
lucky participants go beyond competition experience and a
chance to meet Europe’s most successful golfer. Members
also attend a series of unique educational seminars on topics
ranging from course management to diet and fitness, from event
preparation to rules and etiquette. These enable them to develop
as players with a detailed knowledge of the many aspects of
the sport.
This will be the first Faldo Series final to be held at The
Celtic Manor Resort following the announcement earlier this
year that the resort would become the new home of the Faldo
Series. Celtic Manor has also become the venue for regular
Team Faldo training sessions and a number of other appointments
in the Faldo Series’ calendar.

Walker Cup heroics not enough |
A
half an inch, a half a point. That’s how close the 40th
Walker Cup Match was on Sunday at Chicago Golf Club.
Great Britain and Ireland did everything it could to win
a fourth consecutive Match, throwing one dramatic and unbelievable
shot after another at the United States of America at the
18th hole.
But Jeff Overton (USA) coolly two-putted from 18 feet to secure
a 1-up victory over 37-year-old Nigel Edwards of Wales, giving
the Americans just enough points to re-capture the Cup, 12½-11½.

Girls Home Internationals |
The Welsh Girls team narrowly
lost out on winning the Home Internationals title, at Worlplosden
in Surrey, for only the second time in their history. Having
thrashed England 8 -1 but then lost to the Irish, the girls
only needed a victory over Scotland to clinch the title, but
could only manage a draw which then handed the title to England.
However, the fact that wales were in the mix right up until
the last match of the day shows how far Welsh girls golf has
come in the last two or three years. Congratulations to all
involved. |
