Brewerton Wins English Ladies Open

Wales’ Becky Brewerton carded a final round 68 to clinch her maiden career Ladies European Tour victory at the Ladies English Open, in association with Golf Punk.

The popular 24-year-old from Abergele mixed five birdies and one bogey for a seven-under-par 209 total and a three shot victory over Sweden’s Linda Wessberg (68), England’s Kirsty Taylor (69) and Karen Stupples (71) at Chart Hills Golf Club in Kent.

Having come close to her first win on numerous previous occasions over the last four years – she has posted 16 top-tens including four runner-up spots - Becky was understandably emotional.

“It means so much to me. I’ve been trying for so long. To finally do it is just unbelievable, unbelievable,” said Brewerton, fighting back tears. “I can’t believe it. I’m just in shock.”

She was able to bogey the last to seal her victory and a first prize of €24,750. The victory also places her 4th in the current standings for Solheim Cup selection. Congratulations to Becky from all at Golf Development Wales. Llongyfarchiadau.

Dredge pledges £10k to charity

Welsh golfer Bradley Dredge has handed over a cheque of £10,000 in donation to Tenovus, the official charity to Ryder Cup Wales 2010 Ltd, after receiving the prize from Sir Terry Matthews as the winner of the Andy Stanton award for the leading Welshman for the second year running at The 2007 Celtic Manor Wales Open.

The event, which took place recently, saw home favourite Dredge - the overnight leader - edged out by South Africa’s Richard Sterne who claimed the title, leaving the Welshman to settle for a tied runner’s-up finish.

The Celtic Manor Wales Open and Ryder Cup Wales’ “Summer of Golf” programme, a series of events organised throughout Wales as part of the successful 2010 Ryder Cup bid, offers a great platform at which Tenovus are able to take full advantage of the opportunity to access large audiences in which to promote the charity. Ryder Cup Wales appointed Tenovus as their official charity back in 2004 and since then the charity has been successful in raising over £50,000.

John Jermine, Chairman of Ryder Cup Wales 2010 Ltd, commented, “We are delighted to work with Tenovus who benefit by having a substantial presence at a number of our “Summer of Golf” events raising the profile of the charity and its work in Wales. As Wales’ leading cancer charity the whole country benefits from this partnership with all the funds raised going into further research and patient care.”

Claudia McVie, Chief Executive of Tenovus, said, “Tenovus, Wales’ cancer charity, are committed to the control of cancer through quality research, education and patient care. Our link with Ryder Cup Wales enables us to encourage people to improve their lifestyle through being more body aware and there is a clear link with golf through which we can seek to achieve this and promote the benefits in keeping active and healthier lifestyles.”

Cardiff-based golfer Bradley Dredge turned pro in 1996 and is another great Welsh golfer who is making a name for himself on the European Tour, where he has finished in the top 20 on the Order of Merit for the last two seasons. He narrowly missed becoming the first home player to win the Celtic Manor Wales Open, losing by a single stroke to Sterne after a thrilling comeback on the back nine.

Jon Phelps, Tournament Director of The Celtic Manor Wales Open said, “Bradley Dredge gave all his home fans a thrilling finish to The Celtic Manor Wales Open and it was our pleasure to present him with the Andy Stanton award as the leading Welshman for the second year in a row.

“We are delighted he has chosen Tenovus, a Welsh cancer charity, to benefit from the award. Hopefully next year Bradley can go one better and become the first Welshman to lift The Celtic Manor Wales Open trophy.”

New Website for "Social" golfers

There is help at hand for those golfers keen to find a playing partner thanks to a golfer from Warwickshire. Andy Frost, 29, from Stockingford, Nuneaton has with the help of Warwickshire based web solutions provider, Zarr, developed and launched the www.golftogether.co.uk website.
It displays the contact details of all golf courses in the UK and Ireland, lists how many people have registered to the site from each county and how they can be contacted to arrange a game.
Andy, a 12-handicapper and member at Oakridge Golf Club, in Ansley Village, near Nuneaton, said: "It can be difficult for some people to meet and make new friends, especially when theystart out on their own at a club. What this site is about is trying to break down barriers. It's for people who are members of a golf club but is also useful for people who are not".

The site could be used for a number of things, including when people are away on business working in different areas or while on holiday, but its also suitable for families single golfers and golf societies alike with the added benefit of being able to be signed by a member of a golf club for a reduced green fee and making new friends at the same time.

"It's all about the golf", says Andy.
Visitors to the site can register within five minutes and find prospective partners in their area.
At present there is a discount deal which offers six months free registration to any new subscriber.

Their work on and off the course, and behind the scenes, is vital for the smooth running of the event and we are hugely grateful to all our helpers giving up their free time.

“Volunteers will be given a commemorative branded windcheater and have the chance to eat and mingle in the clubhouse with some of golf’s world-class players.”
