With the Ryder
Cup coming to Wales in 2010, stepping out onto the fairways
has never been so cool. And, thanks to a National Lottery
grant, the Grove Golf Club in Bridgend is helping youngsters
to get into the swing of things.
The club has
secured a £1000 Community Chest grant from the Sports
Council for Wales. Aiming to improve the standard of coaching
available, a number of older juniors will now be sent on
leadership training so they can mentor the younger golfers.
Youngsters
in the area will also have the opportunity to test out their
talents on the green with a series of “Come and Try”
days. The ultimate plan is to increase the number of girls
playing golf and to promote the health benefits of playing
golf to the people of Porthcawl.
The Grove has a first-class track record
in attracting more juniors into the game. Last month, it
became the first club in Wales to receive accreditation
from Golf Development Wales and the Golf Union of Wales
when it was awarded Junior GolfCert – a seal of approval
which marks the club’s commitment to junior golf.
Since the inception of the Sports Council
for Wales’ Community Chest scheme in 1999, communities
across the length and breadth of Wales have been investing
heavily in sports and physical activity projects.
As a result of the popularity and undoubted success of the
scheme, the Sports Council for Wales is raising the level
of grant. Organisations keen to develop sport & physical
activity in Wales can now receive up to £1000 for
a qualifying project over a 12 month period.
Chair of the Sports Council
for Wales, Philip Carling, said:
“Community Chest has been and continues
to be a huge success and is very popular throughout Bridgend.
The increase in funding and the greater scope of the scheme
will increase its effectiveness.
“Panels based in each
of the 22 local authorities in Wales hold the purse strings
and have delegated authority to award grants to worthwhile
projects. We want to hear of bright ideas and projects that
will get more people in Bridgend more active, more often.”
