National Tourism Awards - "Golf as it Should be" category
The 2007 National Tourism Awards have just been announced. There’s a ‘Golf as it should be’ category and people can download application forms from the site – click on ‘Enter the 2007 Awards’

Golf as it should be
In Wales you can play golf as it should be played, you can play your own game, at your own unhurried pace and savour the fantastic scenery. This is ‘Golf as it should be’.

Whether you’re a golf club, resort, tour operator or accommodation provider offering golf packages, this award will reward an organisation raising the profile of Wales as a golf destination, increasing the value and volume of golf tourism, and maximising the opportunities in relation to the Ryder Cup in 2010.

In 2007 the prestigious awards will be held in the grounds of Bodelwyddan Castle, North Wales, on Thursday 4 October, and promises to be a night to remember.
We want you to be part of this very special night by completing an application form to ensure you or someone you know is recognised for their sheer professionalism.

Closing date for all entries is Friday 1st June 2007.

Ryder Cup Wales - Legacy Fund
GOLF facilities in Wales are set to benefit from another bumper injection of cash following the latest agreement to provide support, in principle, to the tune of over £600,000 to a variety of golf clubs throughout Wales.

This support will be provided by the Ryder Cup Wales Legacy Fund, set up as one of the commitments given in Wales' successful bid to hold the 2010 match against the Americans.

The fund, provided by the Welsh Assembly Government, will comprise a £2m investment in total into grassroots golf and is intended to help local authorities, schools and golf clubs throughout Wales to develop facilities accessible to the public where new players can be encouraged into the game. The fund is administered by the Sports Council for Wales, representing Ryder Cup Wales.

"One of the objectives of the Legacy Fund is to provide Wales with a lasting legacy of improved golfing facilities long after 2010," said Ryder Cup Wales chairman John Jermine. "Golf clubs and local authorities are able to come to us with proposals for innovative ways of providing facilities particularly targeted at new players in their area and we've been delighted and impressed with the quality of many of the submissions."

The development of new courses, the creation of junior practice areas specifically designed for young users and ground-breaking concepts, such as drop-in "have a go" golfing bays, all feature in the submissions.

The grants have been approved for a wide range of organisations that are spread across nearly all of Wales' local authority areas.

Sports minister Alun Pugh said, "The Ryder Cup is a fantastic event and when it is held at The Celtic Manor Resort in 2010, it will put Wales, and particularly golf in Wales, firmly in the international sporting spotlight.
"The legacy fund will help ensure that golfers in Wales benefit in the long term and that hosting the Ryder Cup will leave a real legacy for future generations."

The Ryder Cup Wales Legacy Fund is administered by a sub-committee of the Ryder Cup Wales Board and reviews proposals that, with some financial assistance, can significantly improve people's access to, and enjoyment of, the game.
Projects currently identified for potential support will be revisited by the assessment team and their sponsors asked to finalise their detailed proposals.
