Ryder Cup Ticket Windfall for Welsh Golf Clubs

20 July 2010

Golf clubs across Wales which have shown their commitment to the development of junior golf are being rewarded with tickets to the official Practice Days at The 2010 Ryder Cup.

Ryder Cup Europe has made 1500 tickets available through Golf Development Wales, the body set up to develop and promote the game in Wales. The ticket allocation will be used by Golf Development Wales to reward those clubs which have successsfully joined its Junior Club Accreditation scheme, an initiative launched back in 2008.

So far, 33 clubs in Wales have achieved the necessary accreditation criteria, awarded to clubs contributing to an increase in the numbers of young people playing golf and providing a quality and fun experience for their junior members. The accreditation scheme is still accepting applications and The Ryder Cup ticket allocation will be used as an incentive for more clubs to sign up before the matches take place at The Celtic Manor Resort from October 1-3.

Part of the ticket allocation will also be given to the 22 local authorities in Wales who promote golf through the Dragon Sport and ‘5x60’ initiatives.

Hannah Fitzpatrick from Golf Development Wales said; “Having proactive and successful junior sections in golf clubs across Wales is vital if we are to fully realise the positive impact of hosting The Ryder Cup to develop the game in Wales. These tickets are another way to recognise those clubs as well as our partners in local authorities that have worked with us to promote golf to young people.”

Richard Hills, European Ryder Cup Director, said: "We were pleased to be able to offer tickets to the Tuesday and Wednesday Practice Days as further recognition of the excellent work that is being done in Wales to promote the game to young people. The Practice Day tickets will enable junior golfers along with adult supervisors to watch the best golfers in the world as they prepare for the match and experience the magic of The Ryder Cup first hand.”
