| Female students
at Pembrokeshire College were given an insight
into golf recently, when they attended an event organised
by Golf Development Wales at Haverfordwest Golf Club.
The day was designed to encourage women to
play golf, and included a chance to get out on the green,
as well as tips on chipping, putting and the long game.
“We want more women to play golf,”
said Hannah Fitzpatrick of Golf Development Wales, “With
high profile female celebrities like Catherine Zeta-Jones
taking up the game interest is growing – but we want
to raise the profile of the game even further. Golf is great
fun, good exercise and an opportunity to make new friends
– and it’s a game for life. Because of the handicap
system players can compete against any generation, so it can
also be a family game.”
One of the students taking part in the event
was Linet Watson from Herbrandston. “It’s been
hard work but good fun,” she commented, “My husband
is already a golfer and, after today, I might even take up
the game myself.”
Golf Academy tutor Tim Morris said: “The
session was a great success and a fantastic opportunity for
students to get an insight into the game. We plan to follow
it up with more lessons which will be funded by Golf Development
Wales. We hope that the enthusiasm of the participants will
rub off on their families to develop some potential golf academy
stars of the future.”

Three new junior
clubs have been created across Wales in order to promote the
game.
Most driving ranges and 9-hole courses are ideal for beginners
and Golf Development Wales has been working with some of these
to create new junior sections.
Pictured at the recent Wales Open are members of Talywain
Junior Golf Club which has recruited 25 girls and
boys to attend weekly coaching sessions followed by monthly
competitions on the 9-hole course.
The other new clubs are at ForeGolf in Wrexham
and Began Park in Cardiff.

An inaugural junior golf competition
was played at the Ynys Môn County Council golf course
at Llangefni last summer and it proved to be an outstanding
success.
Eighty 5-12 year olds participated in the activities of the
day, representing schools & clubs across Anglesey and
Gwynedd.
The idea for such an event was borne out of SportsMatch funding
following Irish Ferries’ sponsorship of the Anglesey
Golfing Union junior section in 2003.
Mini Môn Masters is a competition for
youngsters with no handicaps who play a flag competition with
a limited amount of shots, whilst those juniors with handicaps
play 9 holes of Strokeplay.
A donation was made to the BHF from the proceeds
of the day as part of the AGU commitment to promote a healthier
life style through the medium of golf.
The prizes and awards were made by Ian Fenwick (Irish Ferries)
and Avril Frances (Nat West Bank).
Grateful thanks to all who contributed to such a marvellous
day.
