It is strongly recommended that all junior organisers and helpers attend a "Safeguarding & Protecting Children" workshop – it should help educate and remove the “scare” factor felt by some when confronted with the topic.

The fundamental premise is that children have the right to have fun and be safe when taking part in sport, and that sport itself, particularly golf, has powerful and positive influences on young people which help to develop valuable qualities.
However, this will only happen if sport is in the hands of those who place the welfare of young people first and who adopt practices that support, protect and empower them.

The key to successful child protection is common sense, and in essence the key people involved at
each Club are receivers of information rather than decision makers.

Ideally, each Club should have three elements in place to deal with this important subject:

A Child Protection Policy
Procedures to prevent Abuse
Procedures to avoid false accusations
A basic statement of intent and procedures
Criminal Record Bureau checks
Ways to recognise the signs of abuse
Reporting procedures
Recruitment and Selection procedures
Vetting procedures (applications/references)
Good practice guidelines

Copies of the “Children in Golf - Resource Pack” will be provided, courtesy of Golf Development Wales, to people and clubs that attend a "Safeguarding & Protecting Children" workshop. These courses can be booked via telephone (01633) 436040 or online at office@golfunionwales.org

The “Child Protection in Sport Unit” is available via their website, www.sportprotects.org.uk

There is also a dedicated website for Golf and Child Protection www.childreningolf.org.uk
